Kharkiv Institute for Social Researches in cooperation with Association of Ukrainian Human Rights Monitors on Law-enforcement, three Roma civil organizations Cherkasy Roma Alliance, Myrhorod Roma, Odessa Regional Roma Congress and with independent expert Oleg Martynenko held monitoring research on Roma rights protection in Law-enforcement activities in Ukraine. Study consisted of sociological survey of Roma people in Odesa, Poltava and Cherkasy oblasts (totally 303 Roma), in-depth interviews with Roma people (15 interviews), in-depth interviews with police officers (15 interviews), content-analysis of publications by the MIA of Ukraine (websites of the MIA of Ukraine and Odesa, Poltava, Cherkasy oblast departments), civil expertise of the MIA of Ukraine activity and judicial practice analysis.The survey had uncovered such issues as Roma legal awareness level, level of Roma trust to police officers, the attitude of the police officers to Roma, Roma rights violation by police (illegal checks and searches of dwelling, stops in public places, bringing to police stations or other police premises, using of violence when bringing to the police, using of violence after arrest, using of hate speech in official MIA Media), the ways how to set up relationships among Roma communities and police etc. The complex character of the study allowed the experts to make recommendations to the relevant authorities who are able to influence the situation of establishing relations between Roma and police officers in Ukraine.The project was realized by Program Initiative Roma of Ukraine of International Renaissance Foundation and personal involvement of Roma of Ukraine Program Initiative Director - Olga Zhmurko.
